Printing, Bind, Trimming 

Unexpected last minute changes:
Originally the design was going to print and bind with 2 side saddle stitch, however at digital print it was realised that the size was too big for this. The production did not want to compromise size as this was imperative to the designs reception, and thus solved the problem by changing to a perfect bind. 

To fit the new bind, the body pages were printed and measured as a stack to 4mm. The cover was extended 2mm left and right to account for the new spine. 

Stock choices:
The design printed on 200 gsm Olin regular to get a white background (as recycled paper had an off-white that would have affected the colour). Each page was printed double-sided on A3 with a 10 mm bleed and crop marks. The cover was printed separately on Ultra Pearl 295gsm due to its harder finish, giving it protective qualities to be less subjected to scratching and general wear and tear. This decision will ensure that the book has a solid, weighty feel to it, and its durability is important as the target audience are children.    

Binding:

The design printed three copies, one to test and the other two for submission. The method of binding meant lots of considerations had to be made and testing was imperative for an optimum quality output.

Considerations:
  • Relevant folding for the cover 
  • Trimming the left side to the crop marks and the other 3 sides to the bleed 
  • Leaving more room for the middle pages so imagery and text is not lost in the fold
  • Aligning the pages in the perfect bind machine
  • Leaving the bind for 10 minutes before opening to risk pages falling loose
  • Flattening books under weight to stop rolling pages












Photographing for distribution

Issues noted:
Even though the books were left under heavy weights for a week the cover would not flatten. This made it difficult to photograph well. Additionally the nature of perfect bind at this small-scale level meant in the period between binding and photographing, one page fell loose, which in turn affecting how the rest of the book looked open. Finally due to time restraints there was a lack of appropriate lighting, making the final images not as consistent colour-wise as the design would've hoped.













 















Animating for online promotion:

With the publication printed and bound, the design produced an animated promo using the various shapes available from the illustrator files, and with a similar flavour to the cover design.
