To secure an artistic and cultural legacy for Leeds and the region.
'We are proud of our heritage and of our role as custodians of authentic Caribbean Carnival events and artistry. Our artistic programme will include a range of carnival art forms and will comprise a rich mix of the traditional, authentic, contemporary and the innovative. Governed by local people, engaging communities we will continue to be led by an abiding passion and ethos around championing that authentic yet inclusive approach to Caribbean Carnival arts which attracts our existing and new audiences.'
As such, the carnival is somewhat a grassroots styled artistic forum to engage and open participation amongst the community

As these seem to be the basis of the carnival as a celebration for Leeds and the surrounding community, in sharing culture through entertainment music and food, whilst being an artistic endeavour. Accordingly, this is what I want my screen print to capture, these elements of costume (design), dance (choreography), music and 'celebrations'. Marking the 50th anniversary would also be a nice thing that stands out about why this year the carnival is particularly relevant.
The best way to capture these elements is definitely to abstract the piece, focusing on the mood and vibrancy of the festival, over obvious imagery. Music and dance can be captured in motions (lines and shapes) which ties in nicely with costume design and manufacture.
