Design for Print: Around The World In 80 Pages - Research

The design looked into a magnitude of publication design to get a feel for the market, and see the sort of boundaries within this line of production. Methods of bind, finishes, as well as the colour and type choices vary greatly to achieve the relevant tones desired. It is the designs job to see where this publication seeks to fit within these, and make decisions inline with their visual literacy.

The investigation considered:
  • Specialist art publications by visiting gallery book shops
  • Magazine layout / informative layouts - by visiting charity book shops
  • Modern versus older visual language (use of film photography, bold type, more post-modern)
  • Picture quality trends
  • Stock choices and book pricing accordingly
  • Extras - i.e. pull outs like posters, postcards, stickers
  • Grid systems or a lack of
  • Use of double spreads and when
  • Strength and quality of physical publication - sometimes it needs to be delicate
  • A publication as an entire experience - the physicality of holding and experiencing - sensory considerations

Moisés is not dead - MARIELA SANCARI

This piece revolves around the idea of representability through images: by doing a xerox version of the book (self-pirate) I insist on the idea (or its impossibility) of making a fantasy come true through photography. It also seeks to make a scathing comment on the “sold out” and the fact that the book is no longer available.

  • Moisés is a typology of portraits of men in their 70´s, the age of my father if he were alive.
  • My twin sister and I were not allowed to see the dead body of our father. I never knew if it was because he committed suicide or because of Jewish religious beliefs or both.
  • Not seeing him has made us doubt his death in many ways. The feeling that everything was a nightmare and the fantasy we both have that we are going to find him walking in the street or sitting in a cafe has accompanied us all these years.
  • I wanted to confront this fantasy through an image, photographing men that are now the age my father would be if he were alive, with similar physical characteristics.
  • Moisés/Landscape installation questions the limits of representation, seeking to explore the emotional bond with images, resignifying portraits of the series to create a poetic landscape.

Moisés has been noted for its folding technique and interesting bind. This approach could be an interesting method of presenting two books in one or for comparing and contrasting the USA and Australia imagery.
