Design for Print: Around The World In 80 Pages - Brief

Brief:

To create a considered and interactive publication that focuses on exposing the design process, and ways of finding satisfaction in the unexpected.

Based on ideas of travelling as a designer, and the way creatives see the world, the publication should focus on colour, layout, type and form in its relevant contexts, to compare and contrast the visual language of each location visited. Taking the viewer on a translated journey of what each designer experienced.

Background:

The publication should allude to ideas of globalisation, urbanisation and colonisation, as well as eastern versus western aesthetics, as two designers stand on opposite sides of the world and experience very similar scenes.

  • Both the USA and Australia are ex colonies of the UK. Australia was colonised so prisoners would have a place to go. America was colonised so that people from England could essentially get rich.
  • Both main cities visited by the designers – New York and Melbourne – have a strong Chinese community, with Chinatowns that contrast greatly to the western aesthetics seen elsewhere. How can this be visually communicated?
  • How can the typographic treatments within the photography be accentuated and heightened to push the focus?
Consider:
  • Typography of different signs in different areas, their histories and contexts
  • A visually thought out publication where the travelling journey is reflected through the pages
  • Appropriate binds and stock choices to best communicate the intended message and best present the compositions themselves
  • Modes of production, product range and distribution of product, costs and artistic value
Collaboration

The main goal of this project is to produce an aesthetically kind and relevant publication, that speaks to the creative audience. The core of this brief seeks to develop my design for print skills, building knowledge of print methods, stock choices, folds and generally investigating existing publications to explore the market value and reach.
