Summative Module Evaluation
The 505
module provided a platform for extensive investigation into the ideology of
ethical design, which in turn influenced and progressed the contextualisation
of my own practice. Hence, placing design in a context when it is used as a
tool for constructive change and education ensured focus on my own outcomes. Design
for a purpose, especially to affect positive change in the world presented to
me for the first time as a designer the scope and impact achievable within the graphic
design sector. Furthermore, my insight into colour, type and
layout selections in relation to design purpose has further developed,
assisting the efficiency of my designs.
I have a
strong interest in geography and politics and so being able to overlap the two
subjects into my practice meant there was a strong commitment and motivation for
the project, aiding its overall success. This freedom to exercise my beliefs
into an unbiased and more focused translation, and through creative outputs,
meant the concept was well informed. This is the advantage of reflecting
real-life events in the practical work as to give a sense of urgency to the
design.
Similarly,
my strong interests in music outside of design further aided the incentives for
studio brief one. The open and more ambiguous brief allowed for the freedom to
explore new mediums and concepts. Editing and photography are definitely sectors
of design my own practice wants to improve and learn more about. This provided
an opportunity to fuse event planning, set design, photography, video
production and more traditional graphic design (through the invite) into one
outcome that clearly projects its intentions and is wholly experimental. It was
certainly evident how perspective into the visual outputs of various eras (colour,
type, image and layout) informed lucid design decisions and outcomes. That is
to same the same with the target audience and campaign purpose for studio brief
two.
Moreover,
the productions from the module, especially studio brief two, have been the
most aesthetically professional of my experience on the course thus far,
presenting my evident engagement within the course. The accessibility and scope
of software and resources available to the practice has enabled a greater sense
of preparation for industry. Being able to create a functioning website, a
printed production that was not faultily trimmed, as well as an outcome for an
exhibition that genuinely reflected my original intentions, concludes the accomplishments
of the 505 module.
