Summative Module Evaluation
The extended practice module allowed me
to investigate a range of methods and approaches to the graphic design
discipline. This included both design for print and design for screen, noting
the various design decisions necessary for each output. The projects therefore explore
the various modes of product, range and distribution for each brief tackled,
such as online sharing and printing ranges.
The broad selection of work produced
displays the range within my practice, whilst all being encompassed under my
design ideology the statement of intent. This
shows how I am able to produce publication design, campaign design, client
briefs, and documentary/video/motion graphic work, with very different visual
literacies, whilst all under the same ideology of all-inclusive and relevant design.
Balancing multiple briefs at once and
the considerations into time management was a large part of my growth in the
design specialism. This skill will be vital in my progression into industry and
producing a full body of work (10 briefs) exemplifies my ability to
cross-manage.
The collaboration briefs were another
aspect of the module that have better prepared me for industry. Working
internally with other graphic designers taught me compromise, and the
importance of listening and pitching your ideas in a way that is convincing.
External collaborations built my network with other creatives, allowing me to
apply my graphic design skills for bigger productions, whereby all the
collaborators are experts in their trade. These outcomes were both rewarding
and successful as a result of the pooling of our individual skills. The
connections I have made through these collaborative projects will be something
that will prove useful when leaving the institution, having for instance, a
photographer on hand when needed, or an illustrator.
Overall the body of work produced
allowed me to investigate my own interests, whilst giving them contextual
relevance to the graphic design discipline. The process of research, initial
ideas, development and production has set me up with the skills to tackle any
brief, whilst the addition of blogs and evaluations has allowed me to reflect
on the process to better understand my decisions and methods. The production
stage of the process is the part I wish to progress in further after
University, as I feel this stage was often rushed. Picturing my work well for my
online portfolio is what will really help me progress in the professional
sphere.
