Current News in the Tech World

Getting an idea of what is currently happening in the technological world, with both screen and design, will help build necessary context and awareness for the current brief in screen based design. Such research will provide an insight into the political, economic, environmental and social qualities screen based design can have, thus enhancing awareness of UX.

Surgeon Shafi Ahmed is using mixed reality Hololens technology to perform bowel cancer surgery.

Using this knew technology, the surgeons can consult with each other around the world while in the operating theatre. They can make notes for each other during an operation , as they all have access concurrently. Ahmed plans to use the technology to train others globally and conduct virtual operations.

This is a huge way how screen based design and progressive technology has and will effect every aspect of our life, with its new progressive intrusion into the social sectors of our society and not just entertainment.

Israeli police arrested a Palestinian man last week after a Facebook post he made saying "good morning" in Arabic was mistranslated to read "attack them" in Hebrew, local media have reported. The post showed a photo of the worker next to a bulldozer in the West Bank.
Google also mis-translated the Russian Federation last year as 'Mordor' from Lord of the Rings. Aadditionally "Russians" was translated to "occupiers". Google said at the time that Translate worked by looking for patterns in hundreds of millions of documents - but translation remained difficult as the meaning of words was tied to the context in which they were used.
This shows how accuracy of screen-based applications is essential to its success. It must communicate on a global scale due to the international qualities of the 'world wide web' and the instancy of sharing at a global scale.

There is a new smartphone game that has gone viral in China where the aim is for players to "applaud" their president Xi Jinping. Attracting 1.2 BILLION plays in 3 days, the app was releasing in the week of the Communist Party Congress - the aim to tap the screen as many times in 19 seconds (to clap for Xi).
This is a closed summit that will determine who rules China and the country's political direction. The game includes extracts of the speech on topics like regulating the housing market / improving lives of poor farmers.
This is a way that politics and screen based design in the technological age are working together to influence and promote political agenda. Public displays of loyalty to the president is normal in China, and it intensifying around the time of congress is manipulative. The players being encouraged to share their progress on social media only uses the app as a platform for free advertisement and spread of agenda.

Amazon has revamped its main Echo smart speaker for the first time since its launch in 2014 and unveiled a range of associated devices. The artificial intelligence-enhanced speaker helped establish a new product category and - although sales figures are not released - is thought to have outsold Google's rival Home by a wide margin. The Echo turns on the lights, the kettle etc.

Technology is expanding in news ways with appliances being used to function out homes for us. Loss of attention span and physical engagement with things due to the promotion of 'ease' is affecting the way we interact in our daily lives - how can a digital application be used to solve this problem, or continue the current acceptance that we need technology to do everything for us.

Hands-on with Nest's new home security tech, entails a doorbell connected to an app. This will allow people to see who is at the door and give them instructions accordingly.  With a huge cost, this DIY security system again feeds into the idea of the reliance on apps and wide accessibility to most aspects of our life under one roof (the smartphone/ tablet).

New technologies - Virtual Reality Headsets and the scope they have to modernise and attract people. Diversifying and using them for education and not just recreational VR video games, can widen the scope of screen-based design and productions. How can this brief be used to promote educaitonal/ environemntal/ political agendas?

Azad Chaiwala  is running a website helping men find "second wives". In the UK, polygamous marriages are only recognised if they took place in countries where they are legal, however, no UK laws stop unregistered religious ceremonies taking place. He told BBC "The second wife website came about from my need, and thinking there'll be other people in my situation." Most Muslims in the UK do not practise polygamy, but some interpretations of the Koran say that a man may marry two, three or four women, so long as he can deal justly and fairly with each of them.
Religious related apps- specified target audience, dating apps are very current (relationships becoming a commodity). Can benefit people who are divorced etc and believe that in the polyamorous way of life.

Online sales industry growing. The vast amount of things that can be sold nowadays is endless - a huge market that can be specified or broad depending on intended audience.
