Study Task 3 - Conventions of The Book

1. Working with your assigned partner analyse the books you have brought to todays session. Identify and list the properties/conventions of your books. (Layout, Bind...)
2. Acknowledge the subject matter of each of your books. Referring back to your initial list, discuss ways you could tailor/add/manipulate these conventions to communicate the subjects more effectively.
3. Following this mornings pitch, think about how your 'clients' subject matter could be communicated through at least one of the conventions you have identified.
You should continue to develop these connections between 'the book' and the content you are communicating for the duration of this module.
Form - Type - Colour - Layout
New Modernist Type - Thames & Hudson

  • Layout - large imagery and captioned type
  • Minimal body of text to focus on the imagery and designs
  • Hardback for sustainability of a thick content and rich book
  • Square, sharp edges to mirror that of modernist approaches
  • Relevant - cover shows type within a grid system which is reminiscent of progress stages - appeals to the correct target audience who would understand this visual representation
  • Consistent grids for each spread
  • Reader will be into graphic design/ typography/ layout and so the focus of this is essential to the success of the book, as how can you sell a book on modernist type if the type itself isn't successful
  • Big type for headings, smaller for sub headings - consistent typeface and capitalised / bold when necessary or stressed
  • Standardised book size
  • Layout could be more consistent - is random to every page - is positive as keeps the book exciting but also makes it look very scattered
  • Could change the aesthetic to relate more to its content of modernism - refined, stripped back, less colour, simple pages
Client for new book:
  • People getting into music - low key, easy to read
  • Stress on ease - clear pictures with clear font for a step by step guide
  • Small and easy to transport
  • Concise - approachable - alternative culture / youth culture /
