Production of Publication

The coptic stitch process is relatively complex and fiddly, and thus requires some time to get right. Nonetheless, once complete the subsequent effect allows the book to open comfortably at each spread, making it a perfect bind solution to the required objective of the book.

Trimming the book after it was bound encountered some issues that left the pages cut incoherently. If this was to be re-done, it would be ensured that the signatures were cut before the binding was undergone. The trimming was thus done using a laser cutter, and as the nature of the coptic stitch is not solidly bound, the pages moved around leaving the finish cut to vary page to page. Due to time constraints, this was not possible, however a solid lesson on time management has been learnt.

In addition, the coptic stitch meant that the spine design was not possible to apply. If it was added, the nature of the stitch allowing a 360° opening opportunity, would be lost. Nonetheless, the effect the stitch gives resembles that of musical lines and chord sections, and thus still adheres to the relevant theme and end goals of the publication.

Examples of how music looks resembling the lines of the spine:
