Background Visuals: Brief

Event: Lost Spectrum
Location: Brighton
Date: 15th and 24th Feb 2018

Briefing from client
To create a series of videos that can be looped for background visuals for an electronic music club night. 'The idea is to have the projections behind the DJ on the back wall'. Making the visuals a focal point for the crowd at the event.
The client also asks, 'for the style of the visuals, could you do them so its almost a bit darker and more melodic if possible. Just sort of darker trippy visuals, weird geometric shapes'
Moreover, using the existing logo variation and logotype, the client would like a motion graphics (in the form of a moving image/video or gif) to play between visuals and for the social media pages.

Outcomes:

  • A series of short videos that can be looped into hour long projections
  • A motion graphic for their logotype that can be played within the videos
  • A gif that can be shared on their social media pages
  • The night will last from 10-4am so 6 hours worth of visuals

Given content:

Concept: A minimal yet psychedelic approach, with a focus on geometric shapes. The idea is to stimulate senses - visualising sounds creates an immersive experience and heightened environment. Design for a purpose.

outcomes summarised:
- black background
- geometry - sarced/ 3d/ 2d/ mandalas/ kaleidoscope/ symmetry
- simplicity with bold snippets to grasp the crowd at points (as don't want to fully distract them from the night just enhance the music and overall space)
- focus on the flow and transition between videos, as this is what needed improving in the last project
- CONSIDER; this isn't a direct reaction to a specific music, it needs to be all-rounded and suited to a variety of electronic music genres

Research:
Existing branding and publicising / advertising of event - gain an understanding of their existing image and the crowd the Lost Spectrum boys attract.

By gathering some primary research from peers who study at Sussex and Brighton universities it became clear that Lost Spectrum is a big event for the Sussex student union body. The findings concluded that: "most students will attend as it is affordable and good music. It is considered a big night to go to and few miss out as they only really occur once a month on average. The body of students at Sussex are a lot more alternative proportionally to other universities, especially because of the populist 'hippy' scene here in Brighton".
