The size and format of the publication are vital for the framing and communication of the images. The idea of having ring binders on the top and left hand side will allow the extra features to accentuate the idea of collaging. This is just the initial solution, so by working in a physical way with this size, it can be seen what way is the best way to add the extras on (e.g. could be with clippings/ pockets/ folds/ tears as so on).
18x15 cm was the tested size - slightly larger than A5. For cost reasons it was important to see how this could be printed, and the conclusion was each image on a separate a4 sheet.
too large to print two images per A4, and must consider bleed and trimming space |
Seeing where the binders or clippings could be attached, and how it could work from two directions, still being able
Once the dimensions were decided I tested how the photographs would sit on the page. Due to the nature of the design, it was thought that each page should have the same positioning and size, and it is the extra features that will vary depending on the characteristics of said photograph. This keeps consistency and draws attention to solely the photograph of the page, whilst still having variety in the added features that will relate only to an individual photo. The photos are so beautiful and complex that it is important from a design point of view not to over-complicate. As there is already two images in one, having them stand alone (as if like postcards) without a double spread or anything is justified.

The design then tested variation in order to confirm the original measurements work best in bordering the images. 18x13 cm was selected to test how a perfect border would frame the images, however the original 18x15cm was chosen as the border shaped the image better, less rigidly, whilst resembling a Polaroid, which links to the theme of film photography.

I then tested the measurements on A4 to see how layout would be best for print methods, as well as to test proportions and empty spaces.
