Visualisation of Language: Punctuation

Netflix series Explained! investigate the Exclamation Point, including its origins, universal use, social stigmatisation, tone and use in all forms of culture, from literary, to popular.

Notes from episode:

  • No other kind of punctuation has the same power as the exclamation point to signal a feeling
  • Using it to translate tone
  • Became uncool after 1920 - due to press and sentimental novels
  • 'unmanly'
  • Advertising had a love affair with the exclamation point as writers steered clear of it - 'pointless'
  • Typetalks
  • Interrobang Combines interro for interograte and bang,  a slang term that emerged from comic books
  • Acclamation point - a demonstration of good will or welcome
  • Conviction Point - if you need to say something with unwavering certainty
  • Authority Point - to share your sentence with a note of expertise
  • None caught on as a different design trend had already caught hold - VW ushered simplicity and the full stop / period in direct opposition to competitors like Chevrolet
  • Use in print ads plummeted
  • Rocketed in comic book / tv series as allowed people to not take things to seriously
  • 'Always with a sense of I don't really mean this'
Uses became specific to:
- pop art
- popular musical titles
- campaign slogans
- SATIRE

SEX / feminism

  • Rise in women in the workplace
  • Full stops were direct and could seem stern, exclamation points became code for nice
  • 'if you don't have an ! it sounds like you don't mean it'
