Rationale:
‘The concept focuses on the geometry of physical space and how this is visualised three dimensionally, taking inspiration from the theme of public areas.’
Working as part of a creative team, the briefs asks to put together a pitch for the concept, branding, identity and promotional collateral for the Leeds Public Spaces exhibition. Dimensions focuses on the geometry of physical space, and how space can be defined.
Space is defined by the Oxford Dictionary in two ways; first as¬ ‘a continuous area or expanse which is free, available or unoccupied’ and secondly as ‘the dimensions of height, depth, width which all things exist and more’. Dimensions seeks to visually represent space through its defined characteristics.
Within three-dimensional space, three values are needed to determine the position of a point. Two points show a straight line, and three distinct points create a plane – a two-dimensional surface that extends infinitely far. Lastly, four distinct points describe an entire space, and as such the cube was selected to depict space in this way. An equilateral three-dimensional shape that can represent the different types of space – empty, available and occupied – through if you can see through the whole box, just the top, or not at all. The representation a cube has of equality, can also portray the celebratory aspect of a union of creatives. The malleability of combining cubes into a grid, also aids the success of this interpretation.
